Over the last few weeks, students had the opportunity to meet the school counselors, Ms. Johnson and Mrs. Harley, and learn more about the many busy roles we serve in supporting them. Students received an overview of the counseling department, Erin’s Law, and how we are here to help—reminding them that no problem is ever too big or too small.

This month, our 7 Mindsets lessons will begin, along with small group and individual counseling opportunities. Last year, lessons began with Bloom’s Taxonomy of Remember and Understand. This year, students will take their learning a step further by focusing on Application and Analysis. The 7 Mindsets also embed our district’s character education traits, and this month we are focusing on Everything’s Possible, which encourages students to Dream Big, Embrace Creativity, and practice honesty. Together, these highlights empower our students to build confidence, strengthen resilience, and approach challenges with a positive mindset. With these tools, we hope each child sees the endless possibilities within themselves and the importance of treating others with kindness and integrity.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. All month, mental health advocates, prevention organizations, survivors, allies, and community members unite to promote suicide prevention awareness. National Suicide Prevention Week is the Monday through Sunday surrounding World Suicide Prevention Day. It’s a time to share resources and stories, as well as promote suicide prevention awareness. World Suicide Prevention Day is September 10. It’s a time to remember those affected by suicide, to raise awareness, and to focus efforts on directing treatment to those who need it most.

Parents, if you ever have questions or would like to speak with one of our counselors, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Kimberly Johnson (kimberly.johnson2@richlandone.org) or Carolyn Harley (carolyn.harley@richlandone.org).
