Principal's Message Welcome to Satchel Ford Elementary School, the home of the Satchel Ford Braves. There are so many aspects of Satchel Ford that I am so proud to share with you. We are very proud of our academic achievement with our focus on reading and writing instruction, our inclusion of the fine arts, and our parent involvement. For the 2009-10 school year, the faculty will continue to focus on the teaching of writing and reading as the primary areas for improvement. Teachers will be using the work of Lucy Calkins, the founding director of Columbia University’s Teachers College Writing Project, as they learn more about how to “teach the writer, not the writing” and the work of Stephanie Harvey, the author of Comprehension Toolkit, as they continue to learn how to teach children comprehension reading strategies. Since 2004 Satchel Ford has been recognized as an Arts in Basic Curriculum (ABC) school by the South Carolina Arts Commission and continues to be awarded this designation through a grant writing cycle. Satchel Ford has been a five year recipient of the SC State Department of Education’s Distinguished Arts Program (DAP) grant. The PTO is very active and continues to support student achievement by using monies raised to improve and expand technology. Over the last two years, PTO has spent over $100,000 on SmartBoards, digital projectors, and lap tops. Our parents are such an integral part of our school community. In 2009, the Satchel Ford Fine Arts Steering Committee (FASC), a parent volunteer group, received the SC State Board of Education Volunteer Award for being an outstanding civic organization. The Satchel Ford School Improvement Council (SIC) was awarded Honor Roll status for the Dick & Tunkey Riley School Improvement Award, one of sixteen schools statewide. I hope you will enjoy our website and visit the teacher web pages. Should you have questions, please call our main office at 803-738-7209.
